This is a lacquered pair of chopsticks, beautiful and practical. Handmade with love in Tohoku, the region recovering from the 2011 Earthquake and Tsunami.
A lengthy, 48-step process called Tsugaru-karanuri is used to produce its lovely, textured motif.
With bits of abalone shell inlaid right into the patterned lacquer, every pair of chopsticks gives off its own unique shine.
This beautiful pair of lacquered chopsticks is uniquely textured and practical. Perfect for eating or serving delicious food.
To produce this unique motif, an artisan repeatedly applies, scrapes, and polishes the lacquer in a complicated 48-step process known as Tsugaru-karanuri. The result is a colourful, textured finish that comes to life.
A labour of love, this technique can take up to 2 months to complete.
Bits of abalone shell is inlaid into the patterned lacquer – no two pairs are exactly the same!
