From: ¥8,050

This is a lacquered pair of chopsticks, beautiful and practical. Handmade with love in Tohoku, the region recovering from the 2011 Earthquake and Tsunami.

Using a technique called Tsugaru-karanuri, lacquer is repeatedly applied, scraped off, and polished in a long process that gives the chopsticks its unique textured and colourful finish.

Powdered abalone shell is mixed in with the lacquer, giving another dimension to these beautiful chopsticks.

Description

This is a lacquered pair of chopsticks, beautiful and practical.

An artisan repeatedly applies, scrapes, and polishes the lacquer in a complicated 48-step process known as Tsugaru-karanuri. The result is a colourful, textured finish that comes to life.

A labour of love, this technique can take up to 2 months to complete.

Powdered abalone shell is mixed into the lacquer, giving the chopsticks a unique, glittery finish.
