Description
Kumohada hemp paper is the oldest type of Japanese paper (Washi) with a thick and very durable blend of hemp and mulberry.
Japanese paper was originally produced using Ramie plant (Karamushi) until the Nara period (790 AD). In the next 400 years known as the Heian period, the main ingredient was replaced by mulberry tree and thus this type of paper was lost to time until 1926 when this form of paper making was revived by Japanese paper artisan in Fukui prefecture. This handmade paper is known for its toughness and fine texture.
This hemp paper is different from the conventional ones, and by blending mulberry and a small amount of ganpi (Wikstroemia sikokiana) along with raw hemp. The finished product exhibits both toughness and a fine texture. This is the current “Kumohada”, and it has made artistic expressions not previously possible, such as thick layering of paint upon other types of Japanese papers.
